After the Test : Pass Plus

The Pass Plus scheme is aimed at new drivers who would like to improve their basic driving skills and widen their driving experience. It is a specially designed course by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry, to help new drivers.

Pass Plus is much more than just a few extra lessons. It involves extra learning in different conditions, such as at night and on urban and rural roads, dual carriageways and motorways. It acts as an introduction to situations that the new driver may not have encountered before.

Pass Plus contains 6 modules:

  • Town Driving
  • All-weather Driving
  • Driving Out Of Town
  • Night Driving
  • Driving On Dual Carriageways
  • Driving On Motorways

There is no test , but driving is continually assessed throughout the course and the trainee must successfully complete all the modules to an achieved or exceeded standard:
achieved – successfully reached the standard required for each of the competencies
exceeded – exceeded the required standard for each of the competencies

Pass Plus is best taken any time during the year after the learner passes the driving test.

New drivers who complete a Pass Plus course can obtain reduced insurance premiums from a number of insurance companies. These savings can be much more than the cost of the course.

More information on the Pass Plus scheme is available on the Direct Gov website . It may also be worth contacting your local road safety officer about the Pass Plus scheme.
