Where Can I Find Support Locally?

Some Local Authorities are able to advise or help parents on how best to teach their learner drivers. Contact the Road Safety Department at your Council to see if any help is available in your area.

Examples of such schemes include:

Dorset: Parent Safety DriveStaffordshire: Young Driver Coaching Programme

Staffordshire County Council's Road Safety and Sustainable Travel Unit have developed a free of charge coaching programme aimed at mentoring young people through the learning to drive process. The aim is to get the young driver, their parents and driving instructor involved in the learning to drive process right from the start . This programme complements driving lessons by ensuring that instructions delivered by the supervisng driver, ie parents, are in keeping with those of the driving instructor therefore avoiding any confusion or misunderstanding during practice time.

The course will help you brush up your own knowledge, both in a class room and on the road with an ADI. It will also help you understand the current difficulties faced by learner drivers and how you can work with your ADI to help the learner be safer on the roads.
